A security breach at the Forsyth County Tax Commissioners office led to the inadvertent release Social Security numbers of nearly 20,000 residents.
Tax commissioner Matthew Ledbetter said in a letter to those impacted that the information was mistakenly included in a data file downloaded by two outside parties. Both had authorized access to county tax digest information through a password-protected FTP web portal. Both told the county of the breach, said they hadn’t used the Social Security numbers and deleted the file.
County spokeswoman Jodi Gardner says 19,793 taxpayers were impacted and that disciplinary action’s been taken against the person who released the data.
Ledbetter said that a county team working on the issue found no evidence any of hack or cyberattack or that the information has been misused. The county is offering 12 months of credit monitoring and fully managed ID theft recovery services.
