With renewed talk about creating a second city in Forsyth County underway, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners considered a resolution on possible city/county consolidation Jan 9. The proposal would ask the local legislative delegation to take up the matter in this year’s General Assembly session. County attorney Ken Jarrard said lawmakers could work on a bill paving the way for a vote on consolidation or could simply authorize a study.

The proposal sparked some dissent during the meeting.

Newly-elected Cumming Mayor Troy Brumbalow told commissioners he didn’t think Cumming residents would favor it. And commissioner Laura Semanson said more specifics of a plan should have been put in place before the issue was presented to them. If a bill were to pass, Cumming residents would vote in a binding referendum along with residents countywide.

Commissioners voted to postpone the matter for two weeks and in the interim seek to meet with both Cumming officials and backers of a proposed second city of Sharon Springs.
