Forsyth County commissioners will weigh a possible local law change that could ban those convicted of animal cruelty or neglect from owning or being around pets or other animals.

Commission chairman Todd Levent brought up the possibility Oct. 19 in response to a recent criminal case where a dog groomer is accused of killing a pet. Levent said that the change could “mimic” current legal guidelines that keep those convicted of child abuse from contact with children.

Levent said the proposal for a possible “Meko’s law”(after the dog who was euthanized following a grooming session) would likely be added to a future work session agenda. He also indicated he’d like to see the state adopt a similar provision.

During a public comment period, one speaker brought up the possibility of background checks to screen those looking to own an animal companion.
