Forsyth County will consider putting the brakes on some types of apartment development at the county commission meeting this week. A public hearing will be held during the meeting set for 5 p.m. Thursday at the Forsyth County Administration Building, 110 E. Main St., Cumming.

On Aug. 11, commissioner OK’d an emergency 30-day moratorium on multifamily residential zoning applications governing apartments. Commissioner Brian Tam said he was concerned about the number of requests being received for new apartment building and associated costs to the county.

On Thursday, commissioners will consider a similar but longer-term moratorium, which would last 60 days after the approval of a new or updated county comprehensive plan. The plan is being worked up currently, but there’s no word on when it might be enacted.

County officials point out the moratorium would not impact rezoning applications to a planned unit development district or master planned district, even if such proposed districts would contain multi-family dwellings.
