Former teacher Jana Johnson-Davis has announced she’s running for the at large post on Decatur’s School Board, a seat recently vacated by Annie Caiola.
Johnson-Davis taught for 14 years including eight years at the city’s Renfroe Middle School. She along with her husband Mawuli Davis help found the Beacon Hill Black Alliance for Human Rights, involved in tackling “discipline disproportionately and the achievement gap for students of color in the City Schools of Decatur,“according to the organization’s literature.
“I believe that CSD can be a model for other districts regarding equity in education, and I am confident in my ability to help us get there,” Johnson-Davis said in a prepared statement.
She’s currently the only candidate declaring for the at-large seat in the Nov. 5 special election, though qualifying isn’t until August 19-21. Caiola, who resigned for personal reasons, leaves with 29 months left in her second term (her final day was August 1). Several weeks ago the board appointed Marc Wisniewski to fill the seat through the end of the year.
Wisniewski was on the school board for three terms from 2001-2014, and chairman for the last three years. He has already told the AJC he has no intention of running in November.
Meantime, two other seats are also up for re-election this fall, with Garrett Goebel retiring from district one at year’s end, while Vice Chair Tasha White is seeking re-election in district two.
