Friends and family of a former Atlanta police officer who died Sunday night of an apparent heart attack in Afghanistan have organized a fundraiser to defray the cost of flying his body home.

Adam Carney, who leaves behind two young children, was in Afghanistan as a civilian contractor. His brother, Josh Carney, is an APD officer working out of Zone 6.

Retrieving the 34-year-old's body will be costly and is not covered by his contracting job.

The fundraiser will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesday (March 29) at Avellinos Pizza in Decatur.
