All it took was getting his wife a corn dog for Richard Britt to win $5 million in a scratch-off.

The 50-year-old Temple man walked into the Red Top Food mart on Highway 78 to run the small errand when he decided to buy a Millionaire Jumbo Bucks lotto ticket, Georgia Lottery officials said.

“My wife asked me to go and pick up a corn dog,” he said. “I bought a ticket since I was already there.”

Britt called his wife when he realized he’d won.

“Neither one of us could believe it,” he said. “I’m still surprised that I won.”

Britt said he plans to use the money to travel.

The Georgia Lottery has provided more than $18.4 billion to the state’s education programs, including the HOPE Scholarship and the Pre-K program.
