Flies, mold cause Fulton salad and smoothie spot to fail inspection

One location of a smoothie and salad spot has failed its recent health inspection, according to Fulton County health department records. Issues included pests and mold.

Get Fruity Cafe, 3707 E. Main St. in College Park, scored a 51 on its Tuesday inspection. Any score below a 70 is considered failing.

The inspector noted “several fruit flies in the facility” and “mold-like growth” on strawberries, onions and avocados.

Store manager Fred Fox told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday that some of the issues were a problem of timing and employee training.

He said they have hired an outside cleaning company and have been in touch with a pest control company.

The store is two years old, Fox said, and he describes their fare as “healthy fast food,” serving a small breakfast menu along with salads, smoothies, wraps and Jamaican patties.

Other issues included food being held at the unsafe temperature, thermometers missing from some coolers and having several expired items like egg whites and spinach.

The store scored an 83 on its December inspection and a failing 65 in November. The report from that failing inspection last year mentioned live gnats in the kitchen.

As for this failing score, Fox said he is trying to do right for his customers.

“We’re working on making all the improvements and the adjustments that’s necessary and they can rest assured that our next inspection ... (we) will definitely be scoring a 100 or very close to 100,” Fox said.

Follow-up inspections are usually done within 10 days of the original evaluation.
