The Powder Springs City Council voted Monday to apply sanctions to five city businesses for selling alcohol to a minor during an Oct. 14 sting operation.

All of the businesses were placed on five-year probation and all received varying suspensions of their alcohol licenses.

S&A Food Mart, 3930 Austell Powder Springs Road, received the stiffest penalty of a 60-day suspension that began at midnight Monday.

Kroger, 4400 Brownsville Road, received a five-day suspension.

Valero at 4551 Brownsville Road, Sunoco at 4150 Marietta St. and Quik-Thrift at 4557 Brownsville Road were given a 30-day suspension.

Council votes were unanimous on Valero and Quik-Thrift but split on the others.

Councilman Chris Wizner opposed the penalties given to S&A Food Mart and Sunoco.

Councilwomen Nancy Hudson and Rosalyn Neal were opposed to the suspension given to Kroger.
