Lilburn officials and representatives from the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu temple on Rockbridge Road have announced there will be no Diwali fireworks display Oct. 30. The Festival of Lights fireworks, which usually draws thousands, has been cancelled out of respect for the recent passing of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the guru and Pramukh of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, an international Hindu organization.
This year those in attendance will celebrate Diwali in the traditional manner of lighting oil lamps. Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights celebrated each year in autumn. It spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair.
The celebration includes millions of lights shining on housetops, outside doors and windows, around temples and other buildings.
