The firefighter was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with chest pains, said Denell Boyd, spokeswoman for the Cobb County Fire Department. Boyd did not know his condition Friday morning. No one else was injured.

The fire left 28 people without homes, said Divina Mims-Puckett, a spokeswoman with Atlanta Red Cross.

Boyd said dispatch got a call about 7:30 p.m. of the fire at the Vinings Corner Apartments, 2101 Paces Ferry Road.

When they got there, flames were shooting out of the top of the three-story apartment building.

She said an investigator found signs that the fire started on the outside deck of Apartment No. 708.

It took 49 fire personnel an hour and a half to get the flames under control, Boyd said. Even still, 12 units were destroyed.
