An early-morning fire Friday that injured a Mableton man was blamed on smoking in bed, fire officials said.

“The elderly gentleman was on home oxygen and decided to smoke in the bed and set the bed on fire,” Cobb County fire Battalion Chief Steve Tatum told the AJC.

When fire crews arrived at the brick ranch house on Regency Way at Allen Road around 5 a.m., they found smoke coming from the bedroom window, and the man and his wife already outside.

The fire was quickly doused, but the man, who is in his 70s, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment of burns and possible smoke inhalation.

“He had some small facial burns and they’re going to put him in observation for respiratory problems,” Tatum said.
