Clayton County Fire ladder trucks are on the scene of a fire at the Evergreen Apartments in Jonesboro.
The apartments, located at 555 Battlecreek Road, have been abandoned for quite some time, said Battalion Chief Landry Merkison.
The fire is burning through the roof of one of the buildings.
“The building is not suitable enough to send fighters inside,” said Merkison. Therefore they are using a “defensive attack” tactic to “fight the fire from the outside” to control the blaze.
Merkison believes vagrants may have started the fire.
“They have pulled the building to shambles, rummaging copper and other things,” he said.
However, they will not know for sure until after the fire is out and investigators can get inside.
