Two days after being sentenced to probation on a fourth felony charge for auto theft, a man stabbed another man to death in Union City, authorities said. Friday, he was convicted of murder.

A jury found 25-year-old Shamell Stroud guilty of murder, felony murder and aggravated assault in the death of Wayne Jackson, the Fulton County District Attorney's Office announced. He was sentenced to life without parole, plus five years.

Jackson's nude body was found in the open doorway of his apartment on Flat Shoals Road when police responded to an alarm call on Sept. 29, 2010, the news release said. Jackson was stabbed several times, including in the chest and back, and activated the alarm system before dying. A kitchen knife was found next to his body.

An investigation determined that Jackson, 53, met Stroud earlier that night and went to clubs before returning to the apartment. Stroud left the complex as police arrived, surveillance video showed.

Stroud, who detectives said claimed self-defense, was arrested more than a week later in Virginia.

He had received probation two days before the stabbing, though prosecutors wanted a four-year sentence, authorities said.
