A career federal worker was arrested Thursday on charges that he used his Department of Education office computer to access child pornography.
Joseph Butler, 66, of Clarkston was arraigned before a U.S. magistrate judge.
U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said the DeKalb County man was able to bypass agency software designed to prevent employees from visiting inappropriate websites.
DOE network administrators alerted federal agents about Butler’s online activity in June. Agents were able to search his browsing history, which showed he had visited foreign sites that traffic in child porn, the prosecutor said.
The following month they searched his home computer and found more child porn.
Yates said Butler has been suspended without pay pending the investigation.
