Fayette County schools may expand residency checks

Students attending Fayette County public schools may be subject to more thorough residency verification.

A presentation to the Board of Education on June 6 outlined a plan to check the residency status of students entering third, sixth and ninth grade in August, using the family’s electric bill as documentation. That method was last used in 2012 and covers about 20 percent of the total enrollment.

Board members Diane Basham and Barry Marchman suggested seeking a way to verify all students, possibly using online databases. Superintendent Joseph Barrow said the county will explore such options.
