Fayette County Public Schools will begin the 2020 fiscal year on July 1 with a new general fund budget of $229,454,060.

The Board of Education approved the measure June 17 on a 3-1-1 vote, with Barry Marchman opposed and Brian Anderson absent. The budget is based on a .25-mill property tax reduction, although the millage rate won’t be finalized until August.

The measure also includes another $7.8 million for debt service, $20.7 million in special revenue funds and $725,000 for workers’ compensation. Teachers will receive a $3,000 raise, as passed by the Georgia legislature, and nurses, bus drivers and school nutrition workers will get a 2 percent cost-of-living increase. Instructional costs remain the largest portion of the budget at 66.9 percent; maintenance and operations account for 6.7 percent, followed by school administration at 6.4 percent.

The system’s end-of-year fund balance will be $29.5 million, which is $6.5 million above the $22.9 million budgetary reserve.
