Fayette County honored a hometown sports hero on Monday, when the Board of Education issued a proclamation recognizing the achievements of soccer star Kelley O’Hara.
She graduated from Starr’s Mill High School in 2006 before continuing to play soccer at Stanford University and with the U.S. Olympic team. She and the rest of the U.S. Women’s National Team won the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup title in July. Because O’Hara was in Philadelphia with her Utah Royals FC team preparing for their next match, her parents accepted the framed proclamation on her behalf from former Starr’s Mill principals Sam Sweat and Audrey Toney.
The award states in part, “Ms. O’Hara has achieved triumph through extraordinary determination against many odds, and her hard work and commitment to success exemplifies the American spirit.”
