After months of debate about whether to renovate or replace J.C. Booth Middle School in Peachtree City, the Fayette County Board of Education voted 4-1 at its Monday work session to move ahead with a new school.
The system purchased property off Carriage Lane and Stagecoach Road in eastern Peachtree City a year ago, but has encountered opposition from the city government because no source of funding has been established for the road and intersection improvements necessary to access the site. Barry Marchman voted against the plan, citing concerns about cost and traffic. Board chair Scott Hollowell said the board looked at the various options “from multiple different angles” and decided that a new, larger school building was in the best long-term interest of the students and the community.
Plans for repurposing or selling the existing Booth building on Peachtree Parkway have not been decided.
