Fayette County’s chronic school bus driver shortage is easing.
Sam Sweat, director of special projects, told the Board of Education recently that 128 recent applications resulted in 21 hires, and new driver classes have resumed. Although he could not confirm that the staffing was at capacity yet, Sweat said 14 substitutes are eligible to become regular drivers, and 19 other employees have been trained to drive. He said having air conditioning in all of the buses has improved morale and helps with driver recruitment, as does offering benefits with the part-time positions.
The county is still hiring substitute drivers; details are at www.fcboe.org.
