Fayette County’s public health department office will be moving to a new building whose financing was approved 5-0 by the Board of Commissioners on May 28.

The two-story, 35,100-square-foot structure will be built next to the county’s senior center, near the Justice Center. Its estimated $5.2 million cost will be divided among several entities, with the health department committing $1 million and the Women, Infants and Children program adding $436,000 to that.

The county will put up $2 million and finance the remaining $1.8 million over 10 years using funds from the health department’s annual allotment. The new building will house the health and environmental health departments plus WIC, while also adding a new unit devoted to hypertension- and diabetes-related illnesses and as well as additional space for training and future expansion.

It will accommodate seven more staff members, such as nutritionists and nurses, who can provide services to more people; revenue from service fees are expected to increase as a result. The next steps will be finalizing the floor plan and starting the site prep and construction bidding process.

No timeline for completion has been determined.
