Fayette County is buying four new school buses and updating the security cameras for its entire fleet.

The Board of Education voted 5-0 at its Feb. 24 meeting to use $700,000 of ESPLOST funds for the purchases. Half of that amount will be used to replace two 12-year-old, 54-passenger buses that have high mileage; the new ones will be equipped with air conditioning and lift devices for students with special needs. The school system is also buying two smaller “activity” buses to bring the total of that type to five, for when transportation is needed for multiple events at the same time.

The other half of the approved funds is being used to contract with 247 Security Inc. of Alpharetta to buy and install replacement cameras for all of the county’s buses.
