A plan to build a memorial honoring the late Pota Coston received the blessing of the Fayette County Commission July 14. A group of citizens and community leaders raised $37,487 to install a garden and monument in Kenwood Park. Coston was the first African-American ever elected to the board, but died of cancer only seven months after her term began in 2015. The circular garden will include a paved area and benches surrounded by landscaping designed to require minimal maintenance. The organizers said Kenwood Park was chosen because Coston was an advocate for revitalizing that area and “personally considered [it] as a place of relaxation and inspiration.”
