Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened early Sunday in an apartment parking lot in southwest Atlanta, Channel 2 Action News reported.

About 2:50 a.m., two people were shot in the 2000 block of Bent Creek Way.

Channel 2 reported that one of them, Deante Benton — a father of four who celebrated his 29th birthday on Saturday — died at the scene.

“We had some type of argument,” Lt. Ricardo Vazquez said to Channel 2. “Not sure what the argument was about. Had one suspect who shot multiple times. We don’t have a real clear description of the shooter at this point.”

The man who died had gunshot wounds to his head and torso, according to Atlanta police. The other man had gunshot wounds in both legs and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach talked to Charlene Benton, mother of Deante Benton, who called him a loving father and said she thinks her son was not the intended target, but was stepping in to help a co-worker.
