Family wants answers in home invasion shooting

July 11, 2012

The family of an 85-year-old woman shot during a home invasion want to know who is responsible for the crime.

The son and daughter of Evelyn Atwater told Channel 2 Action News on Tuesday that they are working on an incentive to get people to tell authorities about any information they may have in the case.

Atwater was shot in the head in her Campbellton Road home around 6:30 a.m. Friday. She struggled with the assailant before she was shot, Atlanta police said.

"We thought it was just a beating, and when they got her here to Grady [Memorial Hospital], they did a CAT scan and said, 'Your mother has a bullet in her head. She's been shot. And we were just devastated,'" daughter Wendy Atwater Truitt told Channel 2.

Evelyn Atwater is out of intensive care but remains in bad shape, her family said.

Son Stanley Atwater told Channel 2 that the shooter needs to be taken off the streets.

Atlanta police released surveillance footage of the suspect in the parking lot.

The family is collecting donations to add to the reward being offered by Crime Stoppers Atlanta, Channel 2 said. Anyone with information in the case should call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477.
