A motorist died Saturday morning in Fairburn when his vehicle struck a street sweeper and burst into flames, police said. The accident occurred on Bohannon Road near Landrum Road.

The driver of the street sweeper was not injured, according to a media release from Fairburn police.

The motorist lost control and entered the opposite lane of travel, which was occupied by the street sweeper, the Georgia State Patrol said in a news release. After the collision, the vehicle burst into flames, and the driver was entrapped and engulfed in flames.

“It was horrible,” said Fairburn resident Janessa Norwood, who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident while she was taking her daughter to work. “By the time the (Fairburn) fire department got there, the car was engulfed in flames.”

The identity of the motorist was not released. The Georgia State Patrol has taken over investigation of the accident.
