Donald J. Trandem works for an outfit called the Memory Company, but he forgot about the handgun in his briefcase when he walked into a security checkpoint at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Trandem, a senior executive of the Memory Company, a Phenix City, Ala.-based sports collectibles firm, was arrested by Atlanta police after airport security officers discovered the weapon late Sunday night, Channel 2 Action News reported. He was taken to Clayton County Jail.

Trandem has a license to carry a concealed weapon, said his attorney, Steven Frey of Jonesboro.

“The weapon had been placed in an attaché case, and then he mistakenly used that particular attaché case in preparing to travel,” Frey said. “Once he became aware of it (at the TSA checkpoint), he cooperated entirely with the investigation.”

The 67-year-old Midland man had a first appearance Tuesday in Clayton Magistrate Court, where bond was set at $5,000.

“We are in the process of making bond and getting him out,” Frey said late Tuesday afternoon.

“He’s a good man; I don’t believe he has any criminal history whatsoever,” the attorney said. “His possession of the weapon anywhere else was authorized. He simply had forgotten it was in the particular piece of luggage he was using.”
