One of two Afghan airmen who disappeared from Moody Air Force base in south Georgia has been located six weeks after he vanished.
Channel 2 investigative reporter Aaron Diamant confirmed through federal sources that the Department of Homeland Security has located one of the men.
Officials have not said which of the two airmen has been located, but Diamant’s source said the airman showed up in Virginia and, through an attorney, may be seeking political asylum.
Kohistani and Rohullah were two of 23 Afghans at Moody AFB in Valdosta for a year of training to fly and maintain a fighter plane. The program was meant to improve the Afghanistan Air Force.
Mirwais Kohistani and Shirzad Rohullah were just days away from wrapping up their training when they didn't report to maintenance training on Dec. 7.
The U.S. State Department revoked the missing men's visas in mid-December, giving DHS and agents at the Atlanta field office the green light to take over the search from the Air Force.
The Air Force told Diamant that Kohistani and Rohullah underwent strict screening before setting foot on U.S. soil.
Both the U.S. Air Force and DHS have said since the beginning that they don't have any specific information leading them to believe Kohistani and Rohullah are of any particular threat. However, the urgency to find the second missing man is still there.
