Several Georgia colleges landed top spots in the popular -- and often controversial -- U.S. News & World Report rankings released Tuesday.

Emory University was the state's top-ranked college, coming in at No. 20 among national public and private universities. Emory has been a top 20 school for 19 consecutive years.

Georgia Tech and University of Georgia got high marks on the list of public national universities. Georgia Tech came in at No. 7 and has been in a top 10 school for more than a decade. UGA tied for No. 23 with Purdue University.

On the list of national public and private universities, Tech landed at No. 36 and UGA was in a six-way tie for No. 62.

Spelman College ranked No. 1 among historically black colleges for the fifth consecutive year. Morehouse College was No. 3 and Clark Atlanta University was No. 17.

Many parents and students pore through the rankings, making it a powerful player in the college selection process.

The list was compiled using multiple factors including reputation, class size, graduation rates and alumni giving.

College presidents warn statistics can't measure a college's quality and many have a love/hate relationship with the report.

"To ignore it is wrong," Emory President James Wagner said last week. "But to guide your university according to it is foolish, if not fatal."
