An Emory research center is focusing more energy on trying to find a research monkey that went missing June 15, this time in their own backyard.
Lisa Newbern, spokeswoman at the Emory University's Yerkes National Primate Research Center Field Station in Lawrenceville, said there is still a strong possibility that the female rhesus monkey could be in or around the facility.
“Given that she is a social animal and she’d want to be with her family, our focus has now been that she would still be inside the facility," she said.
Newbern said the field station has received more than two dozen calls or emails with leads and information as to where the monkey might be.
If the monkey were to have escaped the 117 acres of land that Yerkes owns off Taylor Lane in Lawrenceville, she would be in direct proximity to suburban homes and the neighboring Walnut Grove Elementary School, Collins Hill High School and Collins Hill Road County Park.
If the monkey is sighted, individuals should call the field station at 404-727-7732 or Gwinnett Animal Control at 770-339-3200.
