The two youths whom police say gravely injured a 94-year-old Marietta man in an attack Friday are about 11- and 14-years-old, according to a local news report.
Police would not confirm the ages of the two boys reported on the website of the Marietta Daily Journal Tuesday. But Cobb Police Sgt. Dana Pierce did tell the AJC Tuesday morning that Paul Smallwood remained in critical condition Monday night at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
The World War II veteran suffered head trauma and several broken bones, his family told Channel 2 Action News.
Paul Smallwood's grand nephew, Ricky Scoggins, told the Marietta newspaper that his great uncle, a resident of the Crescent Square apartment complex on Austell Road, was coming home from an errand Friday when a boy, about 11, followed him into his apartment.
"When he entered the apartment, he was going back to the restroom and a young kid followed him in and said (Smallwood's) car wasn't working right and he knew a good mechanic," Scoggins said. He said his great uncle told the child: "Get out of here; my car doesn't need any work.'"
While Smallwood was trying to usher the child out of his apartment, another boy, about 14, entered the apartment and threw a rock at Smallwood's head, knocking him down, Scoggins said. Once Smallwood was on the ground, the boy bashed him on the head again with the rock, Scoggins said.
Scoggins, an Acworth resident, said his great uncle was able to talk until Sunday when he was overwhelmed by internal bleeding in his head. On Monday, he worried that Smallwood might not make it out of the hospital alive.
The youths took personal items and cash, Pierce said. Police have interviewed them in connection with the attack. No charges had been filed as of Tuesday morning.
