Two men accused of sexually assaulting a Kennesaw State University student at a home near campus have been charged in the case, according to Cobb County police. And one of the men, also a KSU student, is accused in a separate assault in March, records showed.
On Nov. 14, a woman told police a man removed her from her bedroom at a house on Wetherbyrne Road, about a half-mile from the KSU campus, an arrest warrant states. The woman told police she was put on a couch and blacked out, and it was hours later before she regained consciousness.
But while the woman was on the couch, she was assaulted by two different men, Romelo Alfred Lewis, 21, and Tyree Robert Mew, 23, who took turns, according to police.
Then on March 28, another woman, also a KSU student, told police she was held down against her will and assaulted while she yelled, “No!” and tried to scratch and kick her attacker.
“Said accused did forcibly hold said victim down by her waist by using his arms to hold her down, causing a red mark on her skin,” the warrant states.
Mew was identified as the suspect in that assault, which allegedly took place at the U Pointe Kennesaw student apartments, located near Marietta, according to police.
Both victims are listed as current KSU students in an online campus directory. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution does not name sexual assault victims. Mew is also listed as a student, and Lewis' Facebook profile states that he previously was a KSU student.
On Thursday, Cobb police secured arrest warrants for both Lewis and Mew. Mew was arrested late Friday night at his home near Marietta, and Lewis was arrested at his home on Lake Park Trail in Acworth early Saturday, Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren said.
Mew was charged with two counts of rape and two counts of aggravated sodomy, and Lewis was charged with one count each of rape and aggravated sodomy, booking records showed. Both were being held without bond Monday at the Cobb jail.
The arrests come less than a week after rape allegations surfaced on another metro Atlanta college campus. Last week, a Spelman College student posted on social media that she had been assaulted by four Morehouse College students, The AJC reported. Both colleges are investigating the allegations, but it was not known whether the alleged victim had filed a police report.
In August, two sexual assaults were reported during the first week of classes at Kennesaw State.
In the first incident, a student reported being raped while in a unit at an on-campus apartment complex at the University Village, where the suspect lives. In a second incident, a student reported she was groped by a male in the Austin Residence Complex area.
The number of sexual assaults on several of Georgia's campuses rose in 2014, the latest comparison data available. The University of Georgia, Emory, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and Kennesaw State also reported an increase in assaults, with UGA having the most dramatic increase, The AJC reported in October.
