A man in custody in a hit-and-run accident that killed an 11-year-old boy Monday in southwest Atlanta faces charges including driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license, police said.

The incident happened at Boulder Park Drive and Brownlee Road around 5:30 p.m., Atlanta police spokesman Officer John Chafee said. Officers arrived on the scene and found the child dead on the sidewalk.

The boy was identified as Patrick Williams of Riverdale, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“I just want everybody to know that he was a good person,” Patrick’s twin sister, Makayla, told Channel 2 Action News.

The vehicle that struck Patrick was traveling east on Boulder Park Drive as he was crossing the street, according to the preliminary investigation.

The driver, Gatha M. Dyer, 43, turned himself in to Clayton County police before being handed over to Atlanta authorities, Chafee said.

Charges against Dyer include first degree vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license. He is being held at the Fulton County Jail.

“I want to forgive his soul for doing this to my child, but I’ll never forget what he took from me,” Patrick’s mother, Juanita Lowe, told Channel 2.
