A driver was in critical condition Friday with facial trauma after her car plunged 35 feet down an embankment at a road construction site in Morrow.

The unidentified driver was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital after the incident, which occurred around 10:30 a.m., according to Morrow Detective Sgt. Larry Oglesby.

The driver, in her early 20s, was traveling alone north on Jonesboro Road at the intersection of Southlake Parkway when, for some unknown reason, she turned off and plowed through the restricted zone, Oglesby said.

The driver traveled 920 feet down a dirt road before dropping 35 feet down an embankment, Oglesby said. He said the zone was blocked off with barrels and signs.

“No one knows why she would have made that turn through the barrels and the signs,” Oglesby said. “There are always accidents on 75 in construction zones but nothing to that magnitude.”

The detective said an investigation continues into the cause of the Clayton County accident.
