A 20-year-old driver is accused of killing a pedestrian who was crossing an Athens street Sunday night.
Edwin Gaona, of Bogart, is charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of drugs, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said in a news release today.
Gaona allegedly was driving the 2006 Infiniti G35 that struck Kathy Maxey, 55, on the Ga. 10 inner loop near the Oconee Street intersection just before 10 p.m. Maxey died at the scene. Gaona was taken into custody.
Gaona’s passenger was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
According to Clarke County jail records, Gaona remains in custody without bond tonight.
