Drenner still uncertain over Avondale bill

Rumors that State Representative Karla Drenner, D-Avondale Estates, will never sponsor an Avondale annexation bill couldn’t be further from the truth, the legislator said Wednesday. Drenner was clearly upset last fall after learning she’d submitted an annexation bill on March 7 without the city holding any public meetings on the subject.

“I don’t carry a grudge,” Drenner said. “But at this juncture I just don’t know where any of the annexations stand.”

Like many observers Drenner believes the Decatur/Avondale annexations are dependent on the LaVista Hills and Tucker cityhood movements getting sponsorships first. Drenner said she’s monitoring the anti-annexation petition posted online by Avondale mayoral candidate Jim Hutchens, which has garnered only 94 signatures in its first week. He’s seeking 1,000 signatures.

“I’m surprised there aren’t more signatures,” Drenner said. “But there’s no way I can judge if [the few signatures] accurately reflects whether the city favors or is against annexation.”
