Downtown Atlanta says, put your cigarette butts here
Smokers, the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District want you to put your butts here – in one of 50 “cigarette recycling bins” to be mounted on poles across the downtown area.
The Downtown District has offered to donate the bins, valued at $2,834.66 total, to the city so the Atlanta Department of Public Works can install them, according to a resolution on the Tuesday agenda of the City Council Utilities Committee.
Also, the District would agree to maintain and empty the bins and repair or replace them as needed, at no cost to the city. The agreement would run three years, with the city having two 1-year options to renew.
Each bin would be locked, weather-resistant, constructed of fire-safe aluminum, measure 19 inches tall and 3 1/8 inches wide and deep, have an opening on the top for depositing cigarettes, and have a capacity of 700 butts. Bins would be installed outside MARTA stations, hotels, government and other buildings and along the Atlanta Streetcar route.
