A Doraville police K9 who was stabbed by a fugitive earlier this year has been put down, the city announced.

Tryko, who seemingly had been on the mend, suffered a series of setbacks in the last month. After consulting with veterinarian specialists, all involved decided it was best for Tryko be euthanized, the city said in a statement on its website Monday.

"I have had the privilege of working with many K9s from federal, state, and local agency K9 corps from the southeastern United States and K9 Tryko was always one of the best I had worked with," Mayor Donna Pittman said. "He will be missed by this agency."

A member of the DPD for more than 10 years, Tryko was partner to Lt. Jason Deyette and assisted almost every federal, state, and local law enforcement agency in metro Atlanta at one point or another. That includes the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, the FBI, immigration, the U.S. Marshal’s Service, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and many more.

He helped with about 600 drug seizures and 700 apprehensions.

"He played an important role in several currency seizures —totaling approximately 1 million dollars — and participated in over 75 public K9 demos," the city said.

Recently, Tryko received the American Kennel Club's Paw of Courage Award for injuries sustained in the line of duty. Police have said he was stabbed by a wanted man who had barricaded himself in Dunwoody.

A memorial will be planned, the city said.
