When their son passed away in 2013, Jim and Christine McHenry of Alpharetta wanted to find a way to keep Jamie’s memory alive.

“He loved sports,” said Jim. “Playing or watching, he was very into the games, the techniques…just everything. When he passed away, it was a catastrophic loss to our family. By launching the (Jamie McHenry Memorial Fund), it is doing something for him and in honor of him.”

The McHenrys hosted the Rocket Shot 5K on Aug. 23 at Centennial High School in Roswell to raise money for athletic scholarships to honor Jamie’s love for sports. Jamie participated in the lacrosse program at Centennial High and attended Haynes Bridge Middle School.

The Rocket Shot 5K, named after Jamie’s nickname on the team, raised over $12,000 for scholarships given to athletes to help with costs associated with lacrosse and local lacrosse programs. Programs such as the LAX Gear Program and LAX Travel Grant provides lacrosse equipment and gear and two $750 grants to high school with summer team travel memberships, respectively.

“I can’t think of a better way to honor Jamie’s memory than to give opportunities to others who want to play the game but need some help getting started,” added Eric Lawson, who is involved with the Centennial High School lacrosse organization.

Although the foundation is just kicking off its efforts, the community can get involved in many different levels to raise awareness and help foster the mission of helping young athletes pursue their passion in lacrosse.

“Our goal is to help kids play, enjoy and excel at the sport that gave Jamie so much joy,” said Jim.
