Investigators have identified the man suspected of raping two Gwinnett County women more than three years ago. Now the suspect, already in prison, faces additional charges, police said Wednesday.
Following DNA analysis by the GBI Crime Lab, investigators linked Jerson Antonio Gomez, 27, to Norcross-area rapes that occurred in December 2008 and January 2009, Cpl. Jake Smith with Gwinnett County police said.
In December 2008, a 28-year-old woman reported that she was attacked as she walked along Singleton Road in unincorporated Norcross, Smith said. The victim told police a man with a knife attempted to rob her.
When she told the suspect she did not have any money, the man dragged her to a wooded area and raped her, according to police.
During that investigation, DNA evidence was recovered and submitted to the GBI Crime Lab, Smith said.
The following month, a 51-year-old woman reported that she was attacked in her home on Kay Drive near Norcross, Smith said. In that case, the victim told police she returned home to find a man armed with a pistol in her bedroom.
The suspect allegedly robbed and raped the victim in her home. Again, DNA evidence was collected and submitted to the GBI Crime Lab, Smith said.
The DNA samples in both cases were entered into an index system, which matched the samples to Gomez earlier this month, Smith said.
In the 2008 case, Gomez faces kidnapping and rape charges, Smith said. In the 2009 case, he faces burglary, rape, false imprisonment and robbery charges, he said.
Gomez has been in custody since 2010 and is being held at the Robert A. Deyton Federal Detention Facility in Lovejoy, Smith said.
The suspect has been charged with similar crimes police in Emerson, in Bartow County, Smith said. The police chief in Emerson was unavailable for comment Wednesday afternoon.
