The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office does not call people to collect money for warrants or fines.
That’s the message Sheriff Thomas E. Brown had for citizens Tuesday after an investigation was launched into a phone scam when a complaint was received.
Someone pretending to work for the county’s warrant unit has called people trying to collect money, then threatened them with arrest if they refused to pay that day, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Brown said, “at no time will any employee of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office call to collect money or ask for credit card information to pay for warrants or fines.”
Anyone who receives a phone call of that nature should not provide any information, hang up and then call law enforcement authorities, he said. Make note of the telephone number and name provided by the caller, if possible.
