About two dozen DeKalb County residents protested Tuesday the proposed closing of the Tobie Grant Recreation Center in Scottdale.

Residents from age 18 to 91 carried signs and wore Tobie Grant T-shirts as they gathered before the DeKalb County Commission and implored commissioners not to shut down the center, which is located off Glendale Road.

CEO Burrell Ellis' proposed 2011 budget calls for five recreation centers to close, along with other cuts. The CEO has also proposed a 2.32 mill property tax increase.

Besides the recreation center supporters, only one resident and the president of the DeKalb Fraternal Order of Police spoke against the proposed $563.3 million budget at a public hearing Tuesday. No one spoke in support of the budget.

Commissioner Larry Johnson told residents that the budget has not been finalized and the recreation center closures are just proposals. The commission is scheduled to approve a final budget by the end of February.
