DeKalb house fire victim identified

One person was killed and another injured in a house fire in south DeKalb County early Friday.

The dead woman was identified Saturday as Ilene Crayton, 71.

DeKalb Assistant Fire Chief Steve Ham said the fire was reported around 5:30 a.m. at a house in the 2700 block of Terratim Lane near Whites Mill Road. Firefighters had it under control within an hour.

Crayton and another person were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where Crayton was pronounced dead, according to Chief of Operations Norman Augustin.  The second victim was treated for burns, Ham said.

Ham called it "a very rapid-moving fire" and said "the house had a lot of material in it. It was very difficult for our crews to get to."

Firefighter Clint Martin said he and other firefighters saw one victim lying inside the house near a door.

"We pulled her out and started CPR immediately," he said.

Roger Simpson, who lives across the street from the house, said he "heard somebody yelling ‘Mama, Mama, Mama!' I came outside and I saw smoke ... and came back in the house and called 911."

Ham said the fire started in a bedroom but said the cause was still under investigation.
