Thousands of gallons of raw sewage have spilled into several DeKalb County creeks in the aftermath of heavy rain across the metro area.

The contaminated creeks included Sugar, Doolittle and Shoal, according to Channel 2 Action News.

DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management was posting yellow signs in yards around the county, warning of the spill. On the signs, the county says the corrective measure will be “to wait until the water subsided.”

The county was also taking samples to determine the degree of contamination, according to Channel 2.

Resident Robert Fagin said he has seen, and smelled, the sewage when it rained in the past.

“Every time it rains the sewage in the backyard keeps coming up and overflowing into the yard,” Fagin told Channel 2.

The county says more than 200,000 gallons of raw sewage have spilled since Monday.
