DeKalb County Police will get a new look.

Starting this month, the department will begin rolling out solid black patrol cars, Chief William O’Brien said. The force’s patrol cars are now two-tone black and grey.

The fully black cars are about $800 cheaper, O’Brien told county commissioners on Tuesday.

Officers will also begin wearing black uniforms next month. Officers currently wear black pants and grey shirts, but the department has a problem with the grey shirts fading in the sun, O’Brien said. The uniform manufacturer has also discontinued DeKalb’s shade of grey.

Black was chosen by a survey of officers, the chief said.

Code enforcement officers will continue to wear grey and use the officers’ surplus shirts. O’Brien said the shirts and cars will be phased in to eliminate a lump sum expense.
