The Tucker City Council has voted Wednesday to dash a developer's plans to build a massive mixed-use project in the place of a former Sears distribution center.
The denial came after a lengthy public hearing featuring supporters and opposition to the plans, which have been likened to Ponce City Market. The council shot down the plans in a series of votes against permissions that would’ve been required to build the 88-acre development, dubbed The Rise.
Stephen Macauley’s plans called for a supermarket, about 700 residential units, retail and much more at the corner of Hugh Howell Road and Mountain Industrial Boulevard.

During the meeting, both council members and the developer pointed out that the property can still be developed. The current zoning would allow restaurants, a movie theater and several other aspects included in “The Rise” proposal.
But the supermarket and housing units, which could’ve made the development more populous than the city of Pine Lake, wouldn’t be allowed.
