Starting Monday, DeKalb County will begin registering alarms at homes and businesses – and levying fines after one false alarm – in a bid to curb false alerts.

County police responded to more than 70,000 calls in the past three years, with 89 percent of which were false. For firefighters, 75 percent of 7,000 annual alarms are false.

Registration is required, and can be done by alarm companies, at www.crywolf.us/oss/dekalbcoga.
