The DeKalb Municipal Association is holding a meeting for existing cities to compare early annexation plans 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore St. in Decatur.
DMA Managing Director Bill Floyd said he doesn’t expect every city to show, but he anticipates representatives from Brookhaven, Clarkston, Tucker, Avondale Estates and Decatur.
He also knows that any map presented Wednesday is just preliminary.
The primary reason for existing cities collaborating on their annexation plans is to protect areas that might be gobbled up by the proposed city of Greenhaven. Though rejected by the legislature last year, it is anticipated Greenhaven, estimated population of 300,000 will receive renewed support in 2017.
Avondale Estates Mayor Jonathan Elmore said the city is submitting an ambitious early plan that includes residential areas Forrest Hills, Decatur Terrace and Rockbridge Road, along with the American Legion property, the Rio Circle commercial district and the Farmer’s Market.
Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett said she plans to attend Wednesday’s meeting but only to listen.
“We do not have an annexation map or a tentative annexation map,” she told the AJC, “since we are we are working with the [City Schools Decatur] Board and [Superintendent David] Dude regarding any annexation plans for Decatur.”
