Decatur Terrace, a neighborhood of 144 homes, has been added to Decatur’s annexation master lane, City Manager Peggy Merriss confirmed Wednesday. The area was originally on Avondale Estates’ map, but was changed earlier this week.

“Representative [Karla] Drenner was willing to [partially] sponsor our annexation under the condition that we take [Decatur Terrace],” Merriss said. “I think they’ll fit in perfectly. I don’t see us adding any more areas.”

The neighborhood sent Merriss a petition in November, with 69 percent of its homeowners favoring annexation into Decatur. Merriss estimates the area, just east of the current city limits, will add 375 more residents and, at most 17 children to the school system.

Drenner, D-Avondale Estates, is sponsoring only those areas on Decatur’s map she represents, including Patel Plaza, the apartments on DeKalb Industrial Way, the shopping center anchored by Kroger, DeKalb Medical Center and the United Methodist Children’s Home. It doesn’t include Suburban Plaza or the four commercial centers at North Decatur Road and Clairemont Avenue.
