Decatur has posted a survey on its website, www.decaturga.com/whats-new/open-city-hall#peak_democracy, asking if the city should continue offering residential glass recycling and if separate glass recycling is offered, would residents be willing to provide their own bin.
Through the weekend, out of 245 responses the overwhelming majority — 89.4 percent and 78 percent respectively— answed yes to both.
Decatur continues searching for solutions to recycling glass since its contract with Latham Home Sanitation, which collects the city’s single-stream recycling and hauls it to various processors, ends June 30. One of the main processors, Pratt Industries in Conyers, has announced it won’t accept comingled glass after June 1.
Assistant City Manager David Junger said last week the city is considering ruling out the option of in-town drop-off locations.
“Our concern,” Junger said, “is that the city is so [residentially] dense, it’s hard finding an area that’s conducive for that. Droppoffs are noisy and you need space to get trucks in and out.”
